Vegetarian in Cowtown: Love Shack January 23, 2011

I believe Love Shack to be a Fort Worth staple.  Love Shack, a burger joint, is the creation of Tim Love, who specializes in “urban Western cuisine,” which, you guessed it, is “steak and wild game, and includes huge cuts of Texas steer, buffalo, antelope…” and other meats.   But I digress.  Love, who is also an Iron Chef America winner, has created something for us meat free folks.  It’s called the Boom Boom, and it is very, very, tasty!

A Boom Boom is a battered and fried portobello mushroom, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and American cheese.  I also had them add some Love Sauce (a mixture of house-made ketchup, mayonnaise, house-made pickles (cucumber, onion, chilies, and garlic) and a dry rub that [Love blends himself] that contains rosemary, thyme, guajillo chili molido, and cumin).  I got a side of their thin and crispy fries, and topped it off with a Shiner Bock. It was a satisfying evening.

A Boom Boom, Shiner, and a side of fries!

Vegetarian in Cowtown: Salsa Fuego December 9, 2010

Last night we went to eat at Salsa Fuego, as seen in the December 2010 issue of Texas Monthly. I will admit that I skimmed that section, so when we pulled up to the restaurant, “built in the seventies as a [KFC]…more recently a hamburger stand,” I was a bit wary that I would have trouble finding something on the menu.  How wrong I was!

The tiny place was packed when we arrived around 6:15pm.  We waited about 20 minutes, looking over the extensive menu that had a vegetarian option for almost every section.  I chose the grilled veggie taco meal that came with two sides; my choices were the vegetarian black beans and green — yes, green — rice.  The mushrooms, zucchini, spinach, and onions arrived on three corn tortillas and they were delicioso!

Salsa Fuego has a drive-thru window so you can bring your food home to enjoy, but this is definitely a place you want to take your friends from out of town.

Sorry for such a bad picture. I was so excited about this food, that I didn’t remember to take a picture until I was 2/3 done with my meal!

Word of warning: while your food is being made fresh, do not get that second helping of chips and salsa!  Wait patiently and enjoy the conversation of your company.
