Roller Derby Champions

My team roller derby team, The Slaughterers, won our league championship this year. This is a huge improvement over last year, as we were in fifth place out of five teams! The team really came together this year, on and off the track, and we had help from our new amazing coaches. It was a great year, and I’m really looking forward to next season. Here is a recap of our bout against our sister team, the Death Row Rumblers.

Dog Days

We’re on our 31st day of +100 degree temperatures here in North Texas.

And, incase you didn’t know, I love my dogs:

They are spoiled rotten and they know it. They love to run around in our backyard, but lately, it’s just been sooo hot. After running around for not as long as usual, they’ll come in the house panting. I follow the Humane Society on Twitter, and they posted a great recipe not too long ago for Peanut Butter Popsicles. The recipe is so easy, I whipped some up as soon as I got home from work.

The recipe doesn’t have exact measurements, so here’s what I did:

-Place wax paper on a cookie sheet

-1 cup of peanut butter

-1 whole banana (because I knew the other half wouldn’t get used)

-Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Spoon drops of mix onto wax paper. Freeze overnight, then transfer to airtight container. This made about 8 pupsicles.

Augie and Sammie love them!

Goodbye Friday Night Lights

The last episode of “Friday Night Lights” airs tonight. I started watching this show in March, but thanks to Netflix Instant, I’ve been able to watch since the first season. I immediately fell in love with the characters, but then again, I have been known to get too emotionally involved with TV shows. With the end of each season, I felt as if a chapter in my life was closing.

I enjoyed seeing scenes of Austin and San Marcos throughout the series, as well as local Austin news reporters that used to work with Matt. It was fun to reminisce about the time’s I’ve eaten and Fran’s Hamburgers. What I loved most was seeing Texas State, my alma mater, in so many of the scenes and how much it has changed since I graduated.

I am truly going to miss this show. I feel like I’ve learned so many life lessons from the characters, especially Eric and Tami Taylor. They’ve showed their audience the importance of communication in every type of relationship, the meaning of community, and how to make a difference in someone by just believing in them.

Thank you Friday Night Lights. I think I might cry a little.

Winning is FUN!

So, in the year and a half that I’ve been playing roller derby, I have never won a bout. Not even in all the mash-ups that I’ve played in. I mean, I’m not horrible, and I always play my hardest, it’s just been that that’s what happened. And I’ve been OK with this, because I have a great time, and my team always puts forth a great effort. So, like I said, my team hasn’t won in a year and a half…until last Saturday!

My team, the Slaughterers, who have not won a game in a year and a half, beat our rivals, the High Seas Hotties, who have been undefeated for a year and a half! It was glorious! My Slaughts truly put forth a team effort and we played great. Both teams took turns taking the lead throughout the bout. With 18 seconds left on the clock and getting ready to start the last jam, we were down by 4. Our blockers put up some great walls to prevent their jammer from getting through the pack, and because they had some blockers in the penalty box, we came out on top 80-79!

I have never seen so many people line the track as I did when the Slaughterers were taking their victory lap. It was so much fun and I can’t wait for next months bout.

Rolling Roadshow

Some of you may remember my affinity for Bonnie and Clyde. I also have a love for the Alamo Drafthouse: Matt and I went on our second date here, and also the night we got engaged, in addition to many other times. And I love Texas Monthly.

So it would only seem natural that I would be going to the Rolling Roadshow’s free screening of Bonnie and Clyde at the Farmer’s & Merchant’s Gallery. Unfortunately I will have to miss out due to a roller derby bout, but you should still go. And if you don’t, I better see you at my roller derby bout!

Amande Cultured Almondmilk

I just finished a raspberry carton of Amande Cultured Almondmilk. It is dairy free and soy free yogurt distributed by Cascade Fresh. My local Central Market had a vendor giving samples while I was grocery shopping the other day and I decided to give it a go.

It was delicious! I think it is thicker and creamier than regular yogurt, and the raspberry flavor wasn’t overpowering like some other raspberry flavored yogurt brands I’ve tried. There are 160 calories in one carton, which, I think, is more than “normal” yogurt, but if that doesn’t bother you, definitely add it to your grocery list!

Work perks

I work at an automotive school. One of the perks is that I can have my car worked on for free, I just have to pay for parts. One of the scary things about it is the students are working on it. It’s really not too bad. I feel comfortable enough with the instuctors asking them to do the work, or to have only the students they really trust do the work.
All in all, this is a good deal. This picture is of the truck getting new brakes.
